There are always games that we wait for, sometimes for years, in eager anticipation before they are finally released to the masses.  Occasionally, after delays and long periods of media black-outs, some games get lost in the shuffle never to resurface.  Below is a collection of games that seemed to have promise and appeal but were ultimately cancelled or have not been heard from in a long time.

 

1) WarDevil: Enigma

The now cancelled post-apocalyptic that was in-development by Ignition Entertainment and Digi-Guys, saw the player take on the role of the WarDevil who fights against the omnipotent Chun Corporation.  After making some waves at E3 ’06 with an impressive trailer, info about this game slowly came to a halt.  Brief revivals here and there with new trailers or psuedo-gamplay content could not help keep this game alive.  The final nail in the coffin for this game came in late 2010 when Ingnition’s London Studio was closed citing development halts on several projects as well as layoffs.

2)Final Fantasy Versus 13

This one is obvious but desperately need on this list.  As part of the Final Fantasy “Fabula Nova Chrystallis” series, FFv13 had a lot of good things going for it.  Being developed by Squar Enix’s legendary 1st Development Team, a team with members  such as Tetsuya Nomura and Shinji Hashimoto (both of whom harken back to the good days of SquareSoft) as well as a darker tone, deeper character development, as well as the return of the walkable world map, FFv13 promised to be the Final Fantasy game fans had been waiting years for.  After being announced in 2006, details have been slow to appear with the biggest news coming in from Kotaku in July 2012 when they reported that the game had been cancelled.  The internet subsequently exploded only to be calmed by Squeenix President Yoichi Wada by saying that the game was in fact NOT cancelled.  Will we see FFv13 this generation or has it been pushed back to make way for Dragon Quest 10 and FF13…something about Lightning?  My guess is watch our for the PS4 and XBox720.

3) AGENT

This one is really short on details.  Other than being announced at Sony’s E3 2007 press conference, the only details available are that the game will take place in the late 1970′s Cold War era and feature “the world of counter-intelligence, espionage and political assassinations”, according to a Rockstar press release. A few screenshots have been released but the release date is still TBA.  Once again, this is a game that will most likely not be seen until next gen.

4) Aliens: Colonial Marines

I remember how great the Aliens Vs. Predator games were; being able to play full campaigns as a marine, alien, AND predator really filled out the games impressive graphics (at the time) and eerie environments.  So when Aliens: Colonial Marines was announced in 2006 by Sega, all bets were off.  Flash forward to 2012 and the game is just now getting ready for a release.  Featuring a story penned as the true sequel to Aliens 3 and confirmed as canon to the original Aliens story , this game is set for an excitingly close release date of Feb. 12. 2013.  Though don’t expect too many Predators in this one.

5) The Last Guardian

Coming from the legendary Team Ico, The Last Guardian was announced with great applause at e# 2009.  Since then, the game has seen its fair share of troubles.  First, the games designer Fumito Ueda ( and lead behind previous games such as Ico and Shadows of the Collosus) left Sony computer Entertainment though he is as least still around as a consultant.  Further news revealed that at one point the game was actually playable but had to be pulled due to some technical issues.  Click here for further details from Eurogamer. What seems even worse is that in August of 2012, the US trademark that was filed for the game expired, leading many to wonder if the game is still in development or destined for obscurity.
